HOW CAN I BECOME A COSMETOLOGIST?
In the State of North Carolina, you are required to be at least 16 years of age, provide a proof of completion of high school or its GED equivalent and complete a minimum of 1,200 hours to become an apprentice or 1500 of instruction training at an approved cosmetology school before you can take a licensing examination administered by the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling and receive your Cosmetology License.

The first half of your Cosmetology program is spent in the Junior classrooms. Your work will consist of lectures, demonstrations, practicing on mannequin heads and classmates, testing your knowledge on all the course subjects with written and practical examinations.
Our class sizes allow each student to receive individual attention from our teachers who will challenge you creatively and technically.
After completion of 600 hours, passing the written and practical midterm evaluations, recommendation of your instructor and providing a physician’s certificate, you will advance to the Senior floor with a Student Permit issued by the NORTH CAROLINA State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling.
In the second half of your program you will get even more hands-on in our Student Salon. While performing clinic services on public, you will build your self-esteem and knowledge to succeed in your future career, sharpen your skills through additional lectures, advanced demonstrations and salon management.
Our program is designed to give you the tool and confidence for entry level salon or spa positions.
Tools needed to practice your new skills will be provided to you during your freshman and advance training. At the completion of your program if you desire a career entry kit you will be afforded the opportunity to obtain one at an affordable price. We made sure it includes an array of tools and resources to help you make the most of your time at Sherrill’s University to take your trained or natural skills to the next level.

THE PROFESSIONAL BARBER
The art of Barbering has been revitalized in recent years, with the popularity of facial hair, clean haircuts and the increase of men taking more appreciation in their appearance.
HOW CAN I BECOME A BARBER?
The objective of the Barber-Stylist program is to teach each aspiring Barber-Stylist the necessary technical skill, which will enable him/her to pass the NC State Board of Barber Examiners Test.
In order to graduate, the student must complete 1528 hours of course study and score 70% or better on the written final examination. The student must also satisfy all financial obligations to the University. After completing the program, the student will receive a diploma and is eligible to take the North Carolina State Board Exam for Licensing as a Barber/Stylist and is certified to work in or own and manage his/her own barber-styling shop.

After completion of the initial basics required instructions, passing the written and practical evaluations, recommendation of your instructor, you will permitted to the Senior floor with a Student Permit issued by the NORTH CAROLINA State Board of Barbering to render services to the public.
In this phase of your program you will get even more hands-on in our Student Salon. While performing clinic services on public, you will build your self-esteem and knowledge to succeed in your future career, sharpen your skills through additional lectures, advanced demonstrations and salon management.
Once you complete the required 1528 training hours you will be fully prepared to pass your N.C. State Board exam and have the tools and confidence to start a new career as a licensed Barber.

Once infection control and blood exposure have been taught, we will ensure instruction of theory and practical subjects including:
Bacteriology; Board laws, regulations, Board website, and licensure scope of practice; Shampooing; Draping; Anatomy; Disorders of the hair and scalp; Client consultation; Twisting; Wrapping; Extending; Locking; Blow dry and thermal iron; Business management; and Professional ethics.
